Scott Taebel represents clients nationally regarding a broad range of regulatory compliance matters including false claims, anti-kickback- and Stark-related concerns. He serves as the primary Compliance Counsel for many of the firm's clients. Mr. Taebel has extensive experience working with clients regarding investigations coordinated through numerous federal and state enforcement agencies, including Main Justice, United States Attorney Offices, the Office of Inspector General, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Securities and Exchange Commission and Medicaid Fraud Control Units. Many of these investigations affect multiple providers in many different jurisdictions across the country. Mr. Taebel also regularly assists clients in taking proactive strategies to identified compliance concerns through self-disclosures made to the Office of Inspector General, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Department of Justice and State Fraud Control Units and voluntary refunds of overpayments submitted to Medicare contractors and other payers. He has submitted nearly 100 different self-disclosures to OIG and CMS in helping a variety of providers come forward to resolve a wide range of identified false claims, anti-kickback and Stark compliance concerns. He further counsels firm clients regarding the functions of their corporate integrity programs, including coordinating internal investigations of compliance-related concerns, recommending corrective action, reviewing program effectiveness and providing compliance education and training of provider staff and Board members. Mr. Taebel also provides guidance to clients regarding joint ventures and affiliations and other hospital/physician relationships, including recruitment, billing and payment and contracting matters. In 1994, Mr. Taebel argued a Medicare reimbursement appeal before the United States Supreme Court. He frequently publishes and presents on health care compliance-related topics.
