On Jan. 17, 2013, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the long-awaited “Omnibus Rule,” which amends the administrative simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and represents the most significant modifications to the HIPAA privacy and security rules to date. The rule is effective March 26 and enforceable beginning Sept. 23.
