Hall Render Killian Heath & Lyman
Indy law firm's culture is mix of respect and revelry with regard to its staff

By Jeff Swiatek, Indy Star Reporter

The Indianapolis law firm of Hall Render Killian Heath & Lyman tries hard not to be a bunch of stuffed shirts.

"We try to have fun. We spend a fair amount of time and effort in hoping that that happens," said Bill Thompson, president of the 43-year-old firm.

With 190 Indianapolis-area employees (and 300 overall in four states), the firm sponsors jeans days every other Friday, throws random pizza parties and ice cream socials, hosts an annual employee picnic and takes employees to the Skyline Club for lunch on their 10- and 20-year anniversaries.

"Employees always appreciate the ability to get together and socialize and take a break from work," Thompson said.

Founder Bill Hall, who died in 2004, established the firm's workplace culture, which Thompson sums up as "a concept of respect and a work/life balance and a family-friendly environment."

Employee benefits include 100 percent company-paid health insurance, wellness programs such as a weight-loss contest and reimbursement for fitness club memberships. Recently the firm added "health coaches" to give free health advice to employees.

The health benefits are appropriate for a firm that focuses on health-care law.

Hall Render also has a profit-sharing plan that pays out annual lump-sum contributions to each employee's 401(k) retirement plan. In recent years, the payout has averaged 5.5 percent of each employee's yearly pay, Thompson said. [close]

National Healthcare Decisions Day - April 16, 2010

April 16, 2010 is National Healthcare Decisions Day. The goal....[expand]
April 16, 2010 is National Healthcare Decisions Day. The goal of the day is to encourage Americans to have thoughtful conversations about their health care goals and communicate their health care decisions by executing advance health care directives. Across the United States, health care providers, professionals, chaplains, attorneys, and others will focus attention on the importance of appointing health care decision-makers and expressing end-of-life care desires. These groups will educate Americans that they have the right to make decisions about their health care in the event they can not speak for themselves. They will also draw attention to the steps individuals can take to execute advance health care directives, such as appointments of health care representatives, health care powers of attorney and living will declarations, in accordance with applicable state laws.

Studies indicate that most Americans have not executed documents that name a health care decision-maker or a living will declaration to express their wishes for end-of-life care. As a result, families and health care providers regularly struggle when forced to make difficult health care decisions in a crisis in the absence of guidance from the patient. These stressful moments can be eased if individuals execute advance health care directives.

National Healthcare Decisions Day is a collaborative effort and many national organizations are participating, including AARP, American Health Lawyers Association, and the American Hospital Association. Additional information about the event is available at www.nationalhealthcaredecisionsday.org.

If you have any questions about the event or want to discuss how Hall Render can help your organization build awareness of these important decisions please contact your Hall Render health law attorney or Sean J. Fahey at (317) 977-1472 or sfahey@hallrender.com. [close]

Law Firm Co-founder Returns to Lead Governance Consulting Practice

Hall Render Killian Heath & Lyman co-founder Rex Killian returns to the....[expand]
Hall Render Killian Heath & Lyman co-founder Rex Killian returns to the firm that bears his name some four decades after he began his law career. This time, rather than law, Killian will lead the firm's Governance Consulting practice and serve as Of Counsel.

"For as much as this is like coming home for Rex, his role to build Hall Render's Governance Consulting practice better reflects his work in the twenty years since leaving the firm," said William H. Thompson, the firm's managing partner. "I am very excited by the wealth of knowledge and experience Rex brings back for existing and new clients of the firm. Rex's consulting services will complement well the legal services we provide to the health care industry."

The Governance Consulting practice will serve established and new clients alike in ensuring engaged, effective and productive Boards of Directors for both for-profit and non-profit health care entities.

"We founded Hall Render some 40 years ago as a firm committed to practical solutions. 'Tell us what you want to accomplish and we'll tell you how to make it happen.'" said Rex Killian. "It is that mentality exactly that brings me back. As the demands of a hospital's governance structure increases, so do the expectations. My approach is to help boards have greater impact and thus greater value."

Killian left Hall Render in 1998 to serve as the first General Counsel of the Daughters of Charity National Health System (DCNHS) and as transaction counsel in the consolidation of DCNHS and the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System. The merger formed Ascension Health, what was then and is still today the largest Catholic health system in the United States.

When he left Ascension Health in 2007, Killian started Killian & Associates, LLC, an independent health care and governance consulting firm and partnered with 360 Advisory Group, an international health care consultancy that helps emerging health care and medical technology companies accelerate growth, efficiency and capital.

Killian earned a B.S. in Business from Indiana University in 1962 and a J.D. from University of Michigan in 1967. [close]

Hall Render Attorney Publishes Health Care Finance Guide
[07/01/2009]
David Lips, attorney at the law firm of Hall, Render, Killian, Heath....[expand]
David Lips, attorney at the law firm of Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman, authored a major book that was published at the end of June on capital finance. Healthcare Capital Finance: In Good and Challenging Times is the only book to examine how the credit crunch and the economic downturn have affected the health care industry. This book looks in depth at how normal financing mechanisms in the health care industry have been impacted by the credit crisis that began in 2008 and continues to the present day.

Among the topics explored are tax-exempt bond debt, the current difficulty in getting bank loans and letters of credit, and the financial stresses in the health care industry - particularly for hospitals - that have been accentuated in the current crisis. The book does more than merely describe financial pressures: it suggests ways for hospitals and other providers to weather the present economic turbulence. While discussing legal issues pertinent to financing, the book focuses on the economic realities in providing health care, most particularly from the perspective of the nonprofit hospital. Much of the book describes the profound changes in the tax-exempt bond market that pose new challenges to health care providers. More Information [close]
